   • Paper applications are no longer accepted.

   • Applicants must submit Livescan fingerprints through authorized vendors using the Security Guard Certification authorization code.

   • A receipt confirming fingerprint submission to Maryland CJIS and the FBI must be uploaded with the application.

3. Improved Background Check Processes:

   • Criminal history investigations are conducted as part of the licensing process to ensure applicants meet the moral and legal standards for certification.

4. Streamlined Submission of Documentation:

   • Applicants must upload all required documents, including passport-style photographs, training certificates, and fingerprint receipts, directly to the Licensing Portal.

5. Training Compliance Requirements:

   • All applicants must provide documentation of 12 hours of state-approved initial security training or proof of recent employment as a law enforcement officer.

6. Clear Communication for Renewals:

   • Renewal applications, along with updated fingerprints and proof of continuing education, must be submitted electronically at least 90 days before the license expiration date to avoid late fees.

7. Enhanced Employer Involvement:

   • Security Guard Agencies and Employers are responsible for verifying applicant details, confirming documentation, and submitting applications along with fees to the Licensing Division.​

Maryland Security Guard License Requirements

To qualify for a Maryland Security Guard License, applicants must:

1. Be at least 18 years old (unarmed) or 21 years old (armed).

2. Be a U.S. citizen or a legal alien authorized to work in the U.S.

3. Pass a criminal background check conducted by Maryland CJIS and the FBI.

4. Submit Livescan fingerprints with the receipt uploaded to the Licensing Portal.

5. Complete 12 hours of state-approved security training (or provide proof of recent law enforcement employment).

6. Upload a passport-style photo through the Licensing Portal.

7. Demonstrate good moral character with no disqualifying criminal convictions.

8. Pay the required fees electronically through the Licensing Portal.

Application Process Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Complete Prerequisites:

   • Submit Livescan fingerprints and upload the receipt.

   • Complete 12 hours of initial security training or provide proof of law enforcement employment.

   • Prepare and upload a passport-style photo via the Licensing Portal.

2. Access the Licensing Portal:

   • Create a personal account at the Licensing Portal.

   • Ensure your account details are accurate.

3. Submit Your Application:

   • Complete the Security Guard Certification application.

   • Provide your application number and PIN to your Security Guard Agency or Employer for verification.

4. Employer/Agency Submission:

   • Employers verify and reaffirm the application details, then submit the application along with required fees.

5. Approval Notification:

   • Once approved, applicants receive a certification email. Disapproved applicants are provided instructions for appeal.

Timeline: Allow up to 90 days for the application process. License Renewal Process Maryland Security Guard Licenses must be renewed every three years. Renewal applications must be submitted at least 90 days before expiration to avoid late fees.

Renewal Requirements:

• Updated Livescan fingerprints.

• Proof of 8 hours of continuing security training approved by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission.

• Payment of renewal and any applicable late fees.

 

Fees for Maryland Security Guard License

Fee Breakdown:

1. Original Application Fee: $15.00 (fingerprinting fees not included).

2. Renewal Fee: $10.00 (fingerprinting fees not included).

3. Late Fees: $5.00 per day, up to a maximum of $150.00
